Testing
Testing
WCCCD requires that all first-time students with intent to pursue a degree or certificate program must be assessed for skills in reading, writing, and mathematics prior to registering for classes.
Ability To Benefit
The Federal Department of Education requires that students who want to receive federal financial aid and who do not have a high school diploma or a GED demonstrate their "ability to benefit" from college level work. Consequently, Wayne County Community College District (WCCCD) requires that such students take the COMPASS Test, which covers reading, English and mathematics. This is the same test that all students are required to take for academic placement. Click here for more information.
Assessment/Testing
What is Assessment Testing and what do the scores mean?
Assessment testing is a process by which the District advising staff can determine your skill levels in reading, writing and math. The test that you will take does not determine if you are admitted to one of the District campuses. It provides the advising staff with the information that they need regarding your skill levels so that they can accurately advise you on the selection of courses that are appropriate for your skill level.
How do I schedule an assessment test?
Contact the student services office at the campus of your choice. Please plan to stay at least two hours for your testing session. It is suggested that you prepare for this assessment prior to your test day. The student service office can provide you with sample test questions and practice tests to help you prepare. Please bring a photo ID with you when testing. The District uses two versions of an assessment test. The paper pencil version (ASSET) and the computerized version (COMPASS), both of these test will provide the advising staff with the necessary information about your skill levels so that the academic advisors can advise you appropriately.
