Presented by the School of Continuing Education

Curtis L. Ivery Downtown Campus
1001 West Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48226

Join Us for a Tour of the Ossian Sweet House! This experience will examine the life and legacy of Dr. Ossian Sweet, an African American physician whose courage in the face of racial violence during the 1925–1926 Detroit trial became a landmark moment in the struggle for civil rights and housing equality.

Participants will visit the historic Ossian Sweet home, gaining a firsthand perspective on the space at the center of the trial and its importance as a preserved landmark. Through this visit, along with an exploration of Sweet’s personal story, the role of Clarence Darrow in his defense, and the broader social climate of early 20th century Detroit, participants will gain insight into the intersections of law and community resilience. The course also considers the lasting impact of Sweet’s case on civil rights, urban history, and the ongoing preservation of his legacy today.

Meet at 12:30 p.m. in Room 218, transportation available. This tour is open to the campus community at no cost, but space is limited, so pre-register today in Room 202 or call 313-496-2758! We can’t wait to see you there!
