Financial Aid

At Wayne County Community College District, we pride ourselves on making college accessible and affordable for everyone. Don’t let the cost of college hold you back from your dreams, apply for financial aid today.

What Are The Types of Financial Aid?

  • Grants –Are financial aid that do not have to be repaid. Generally, grants are for undergraduate students, and the grant amount is based on need, cost of attendance, and the student’s enrollment status.
  • Loans – These are borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest. Both undergraduate and graduate students may borrow money. The maximum loan amounts depend on the student’s year in school.
  • Federal Work Study – These funds are earned by students working part-time (an average of 25-30 hours per week) for eligible employers. Students earn wages up to the amount of their Work Study award.
  • Scholarships – These are gift funds based on high academic achievement or special talent. They do not have to be repaid.

    Student Loan Repayment Has Resumed

Congress passed a law preventing further extensions of the payment pause. Student loan interest resumed in September 2023, and repayments resumed in October 2023. Remember that student loans MUST BE REPAID. Avoid going into default status by contacting your loan servicer or logging on to https://studentaid.gov to review the many available and affordable repayment options. Failure to repay student loans may result in wage garnishments, reduction of your credit score and other negative consequences.

Remember, financial aid isn’t just “free” money.

It’s like earning a paycheck – you need to attend classes, complete your assignments, and maintain good grades to keep it. And just like a job, the funding can be affected if you don’t meet the requirements.

Most financial aid is awarded based on financial need as defined by the federal government. But even if you don’t qualify for need-based aid, you can still apply for a federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. While you need to repay this loan, the interest rate and repayment terms are generally more favorable than private loans. Additionally, you might be eligible for various scholarships to help cover your costs.

How to Qualify for Financial Aid

To qualify for most financial aid, you must fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, commonly known as the FAFSA. We provide a checklist of other steps you need to take.

The federal government, which supplies most of the money for financial aid, has established some eligibility requirements. One says you must make Satisfactory Academic Progress, which shouldn’t be a problem as long as you attend your classes and do the work.

What happens after you submit your FAFSA? Find out How We Deliver Your Financial Aid.
