Mandisa Smith: The Art of Felting Exhibit at WCCCD Northwest Campus

Nationally Exhibited Textile Artist Mandisa Smith Opens New Exhibit at Brown and Juanita C. Ford Art Gallery at WCCCD Northwest Campus

DETROIT, Mich. – Feb. 28, 2024 – A new exhibit featuring the unique felting works of nationally renowned artist Mandisa Smith is on display through April 26, 2024, at the Brown and Juanita C. Ford Art Gallery at Wayne County Community College District’s Northwest Campus.

The campus is located at 8200 West Outer Drive in Detroit.

Titled “Mandisa Smith: The Art of Felting”, the exhibit features sculptural pieces, wearable art, and evocative abstract artwork using the ancient and distinctive wet felting technique. Smith incorporates naturally printed silk, found objects, and mixed media to produce one-of-a-kind works that evoke history and emotion while pushing the boundaries of textile art.

About the Artist

Mandisa Smith’s work has been exhibited locally and nationally, including at:

  • The Scarab Club
  • The Detroit Institute of Arts
  • Healdsburg Center for the Arts (California)
  • The Fearless Artist Pop-Up Exhibit (New York)

Recent exhibitions include:

  • “Women I Love” (Norwest Gallery)
  • “Conversations in Fiber” (Southfield Civic Center Group Show)

Smith has trained with master felters from the Netherlands, Ireland, Japan, Lithuania, and Australia.

She is the recipient of:

  • 2015 Surface Design Association’s Socially Engaged Practices Award
  • 2014 Knight Arts Challenge Award: Fiber Art on the Avenue Project

This exhibit is presented in partnership with WCCCD’s School of Continuing Education. It is free and open to the public, Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
