Renowned artist Charlene Uresy "African symbolism: objet d'art" exhibit on view at WCCCD Brown and Juanita C. Ford Art Gallery at Northwest Campus
DETROIT, Mich. – Jan. 26, 2026 – Nationally exhibited and renowned artist Charlene Uresy's "African Symbolism: Objet d'Art" exhibit opened Jan. 20, with an opening reception planned for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Wayne County Community College District's Brown and Juanita C. Ford Art Gallery at the Northwest Campus. The Northwest Campus is located at 8200 West Outer Drive in Detroit. The exhibit will be on view through March 20, 2026. The reception and the exhibit are open to the public at no cost.
Uresy is an African-Cuban-American photographer and functional art painter who uses symbolism and motifs of the African diaspora. Uresy was born in Chicago, Illinois, but lived in Detroit, Michigan for years, graduating from Eastern Michigan University and retiring from the Detroit Public Schools Community District as an art educator. Uresy's intricately painted furniture pieces have been represented in private collections and public exhibits throughout the nation. In Detroit, her work has been exhibited at the Carr Center, online magazine, Cutting-Edge Artist; B.L.A.C. Magazine; Art Party; Palmer Park, Belle Isle, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, and more.
